Why Attending Travel Conferences is Crucial for Travel Designers

As a tour operator and travel designer, I often get asked how I stay on top of the latest trends, destinations, and best practices in an industry that's constantly evolving. The answer is simple: attending travel conferences as experience is key. These events are vital for keeping us not only informed but also connected to a vast network of suppliers, colleagues, and other industry professionals. Recently, I had the privilege of attending The Society Summit, hosted by The Travel Society, and I can confidently say it was one of the most impactful experiences of my career.

A Champion's Experience at The Society Summit

This year’s Society Summit was more than just another conference; it was a gathering of like-minded professionals who share a passion for creating memorable travel experiences. I was honored to receive one of three awards, and was named a Champion during the event, a recognition that underscored the hard work, dedication, and commitment to excellence that we, as tour operators, travel designers, and industry professionals, bring to the table.

But beyond personal achievements, the Society Summit offered invaluable opportunities for growth. I had 60 one-on-one supplier meetings over the course of the event—yes, 60! These sessions were incredibly productive, allowing me to build relationships with suppliers from various parts of the travel ecosystem, from luxury hotels and tour operators to airlines and cruise lines. These meetings not only strengthened my partnerships but also expanded my knowledge of new and exciting offerings that I can now bring to my clients–not to mention some exclusive client offerings!

Best Practices: What We Learn and How It Benefits You

One of the most rewarding aspects of attending Society Summit is the chance to discuss and learn best practices. Travel designers, just like our clients, are constantly seeking out the best tools and resources to streamline processes and enhance customer satisfaction. From the workshops and expert panels, we came away with a renewed focus on:

  1. Personalized Client Experiences – Understanding new ways to tailor travel plans to the specific needs and desires of clients, whether that’s through boutique accommodations, exclusive tours, or unique cultural experiences.
  2. Leveraging Technology – With advancements in travel technology, we’re now better equipped to manage bookings, track itineraries, and respond to client needs in real-time. Learning about the latest tools helps me ensure that every trip I plan runs smoothly from start to finish.
  3. Sustainability Practices – Eco-conscious travel continues to rise, and many suppliers are making strides toward sustainability. Being able to recommend options that reduce carbon footprints or support local communities adds immense value for clients who care about responsible tourism.
  4. Crisis Management – As travel designers, part of our job is to prepare for the unexpected. From weather disruptions to geopolitical issues, having the right connections and contingency plans in place is key. At the summit, we shared best practices in navigating these scenarios to ensure clients are taken care of, no matter what happens.

Why This Matters for You, Our Clients

Attending events like The Society Summit is about more than professional development—it's about enriching the service we offer to you. These conferences give us access to the latest insider knowledge, exclusive deals, and unique experiences that you simply can’t find online.

Every supplier meeting we attended adds another layer of expertise to my toolbox, enabling us to craft tailor-made vacations that go above and beyond expectations. By staying on top of industry trends, we can ensure that our clients benefit from the very best the travel world has to offer, whether it's securing a coveted cruise cabin, getting a room upgrade at a luxury resort, or finding the perfect off-the-beaten-path destination.

Final Thoughts

Travel is an ever-changing industry, and staying ahead of the curve is essential for any travel designer who wants to offer the highest level of service. The Society Summit provided me with not only a wealth of knowledge and inspiration but also reinforced the importance of attending such events. For travel designers, these conferences are an invaluable resource, and for clients, they translate into better, more informed, and more personalized service.

As we continue to integrate what we’ve learned into my daily work, we are excited about the possibilities that lie ahead—for both us and the travelers for which we have the privilege of designing unforgettable journeys.
